Humerus plates are used as extramedullary splints to immobilize two major fracture ends without intervention in the fracture area. Humerus shaft fractures do not require ananatomical reduction, and direct manipulation of reduction risks interfering with the blood supply to the fracture end, increasing the likelihood of fracture healing if soft tissue continuity is preserved. The alignment of major fracture blocks can be accomplished by indirect use of retractors and soft tissue attachment. Bridging plates provide stability and are sufficient for secondary fracture union (callus union). In rare cases, a large wedge fracture may require lag screws to be fixed to the main fracture mass, avoiding lag screws in the case of multiple fractures.
